Stainless steel 436 is a modification of stainless steel 430 with columbium and molybdenum added to reduce the tendency of wavy lines, or roping, during forming. It has improved corrosion resistance and weldability.Stainless steel 436 is ferritic steel that has excellent oxidation resistance and corrosion testing compared to grade 409. The addition of molybdenum in this alloy enhances pitting resistance. It is more resistant to stress corrosion than 304 in harsh corrosive environments such as coastal atmosphere decoration and pools. It is also resistant to stress corrosion cracking in the presence of chlorides, and has excellent formability.

The material
can be resistance welded, brazed, and soldered. SS 436 is resistant to atmospheric corrosion and fresh water, but it not resistant to most salts and seawater. It is resistant to scaling by oxidation up to about 1400°F
